Waterproof Jewellery: Is It Actually a Thing?

It’s a term we see often. Waterproof jewellery.
But in reality, that wording can be a little misleading.

Most of the time, “waterproof” simply refers to jewellery made from materials that are more resistant to water exposure, not immune to it. And that distinction matters.

Metals like gold, platinum, and stainless steel are generally durable. They can handle everyday contact like handwashing, the occasional shower, or even a quick swim. But even these materials are not invincible.

Because the real issue is not just water. It is what is in the water.

Waterproof Jewellery: Is It Actually a Thing?

What Actually Causes Damage?

Water on its own is rarely the problem. It is the elements and chemicals within it that slowly affect your jewellery over time:

  • Chlorine from swimming pools can weaken and damage metals with repeated exposure
  • Saltwater is naturally corrosive and can dull surfaces over time
  • Soaps, shampoos, and lotions leave behind residue that builds up and reduces shine
  • Sterling silver can tarnish quickly when exposed to chlorinated water, although this can usually be professionally restored

It’s Not Just About the Metal

Even if the metal itself holds up well, other parts of your jewellery may be more vulnerable:

  • Gemstones vary greatly. Some are porous and can absorb water, while others react to chemicals
  • Settings and clasps can weaken over time with repeated exposure
  • Gold plating, including vermeil, will wear down faster when exposed to water and chemicals

So What Should You Do?

If you want your jewellery to last, and to keep its beauty for years to come, a little care goes a long way:

  • Remove your jewellery before swimming, using hot tubs, or cleaning
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water and chemicals
  • Clean your pieces gently from time to time
  • Have important pieces checked periodically for wear or loosening

Why Resin and Water Don’t Mix

If your jewellery contains resin, like many keepsake pieces do, water exposure becomes even more important to manage.

Resin is a porous material. That means it can absorb moisture and, more importantly, whatever is in that moisture. Chemicals such as chlorine, hand sanitiser, perfumes, and cleaning products can penetrate the surface and cause damage that cannot simply be polished away.

Over time, this can lead to discolouration, cloudiness, surface dulling, or even structural weakening. In some cases, the damage is permanent.

For this reason, resin keepsake jewellery should always be treated with extra care. It is not suitable for water exposure, and we strongly recommend removing it before washing hands, showering, swimming, or applying any products.

The Honest Truth

No jewellery is truly waterproof.

Some materials are simply more forgiving than others. More resistant. More durable. More able to handle everyday life. But every piece, no matter how well made, benefits from mindful care.

Because at the end of the day, jewellery is not just something you wear.
It is something you keep.
