Mica pigments

Natural Form

One of the initial questions that most people have regarding mica pigment is the most obvious: what is it?

Mica is the name given to a group of silicate minerals which can be ground down into a sparkling powder for use in beauty products, causing it to be referred to as “nature’s glitter”.

Mica is a naturally occurring mineral that has numerous unique qualities. In its unmodified state, colors vary between the different minerals, from silver and white, pale yellow, creamy color to pink and purple tones.  However, one of the most useful attributes of mica is its ability to absurd dyes and take on almost any color.

Pigment Form

While mica will willingly accept dyes and absorb color, there are almost no substances into which mica will dissolve. This may seem like a hindrance at first, but it is actually the secret to the versatility of mica. From its natural state as a jagged mineral, mica intended for commercial or decorative use is typically ground into a fine powder. This powder is then dyed and, because it will not dissolve in most substances, it is extremely stable. This allows pigmented mica to be added to any number of other paints, adhesives, and resins in order to color them without modifying their inherent properties.

Use

Almost any decorated or colored material you see potentially contains mica.

Mica color pigments can be added to paint for automotive or any other applications. They can be added to inks for screen printing shirts.

Here at Megan Goldner Designs, mica is used mainly in our Keepsake range to color our beautifully crafted resin items that gives you vibrant color and unique blends.

Because of their stable and inert nature, they can even be used to color and decorate soaps or cosmetics. In all of these cases, the mica pigments are suspended in the base substance – thus lending their color without modifying the properties of the material around them.

As you can probably ascertain, the possibilities with mica are virtually limitless.
